About Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda’s birth name was Narendra Nath Dutta. He was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata (then Calcutta) and passed away on July 4, 1902. His father was Vishwanath Dutta, and his mother was Bhuvaneshwari Devi.

He came from a well-off family, but after his father’s sudden death, his family fell into financial trouble. He struggled to find a job and even went door to door looking for work, but he couldn’t get hired. This made him lose faith in religion and become an atheist.

In 1881, he met Shri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa at the Dakshineswar Kali Temple and became his disciple. Swami Vivekananda is famous for introducing Vedanta and Yoga to the West. He loved his country deeply and spoke out about India’s poverty, urging the government to focus on solving it and move forward.

He is best remembered for his speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893, in which he introduced India’s culture and Hinduism to the world. He started by saying, “Sisters and brothers of America…”
